Meet ANJALI NATh

What is your favorite thing about singing and music?

Singing is freeing and music is a powerful way to express emotions. It can also be nostalgic - I associate different times in my life with different songs or musicians.

A few years ago, I made recordings of my grandmother singing. She has a beautiful alto voice and sings in a choir. I vividly remember that day and listening to the recording helps me feel close to her, even though she lives in Germany.

What is your favorite thing about being in lessons?

It's fun to tune out all distractions and focus on practicing with supportive, professional feedback. When I try a new style, I can count on Radina to give me honest feedback about my approach and how I can improve it. Sometimes I can't evaluate my progress that well when I am listening to recordings of myself, so having Radina there to point out where my technique is progressing and where I might focus next is helpful. I'm also encouraged by her reactions when I've been practicing at home between lessons.

What would you like others to know about singing or music?

Practicing an instrument, including singing, increases brain plasticity. Music is like a kind of magic. Sequences of notes or chords can influence people's emotions. How powerful is that?

How has music and singing influenced other areas of your life?

I write/direct and music plays a big part in my films and projects. I'm learning to write original songs and it's been liberating since music licensing is prohibitively expensive. Beyond that, singing makes me a happier person.
