Audition Preparation for Virtual Auditions

With more and more auditions happening online via video recordings, here are our 3 tips for nailing your online audition:

1. Set up your Space

One of the advantages of taped auditions is that you can set up your space to your advantage. Online auditions should be in a space that allows you to shine rather than distract from your performance.

  • Create a neutral backdrop by setting yourself against a blank wall or by placing a piece of cloth behind you (be sure there are no wrinkles).

  • Minimize sound distraction by closing yourself off in a room. Be sure to tell friends, family, and children to stay quiet. Put pets in another room or better yet, ask someone to watch them while you’re auditioning.

  • Set up lighting that casts you well, such as natural lighting or a circular lamp. Don’t position your camera with a window behind you and avoid using overhead lights, which cast harsh shadows.

2. Be Prepared

Yes, you can re-record taped auditions, but unless you want to go through endless recordings, prepare for your audition taping the same way you would for a live audition.

  • Learn your songs

  • Connect to the song emotionally & from a storytelling point

  • Picture an audience behind the camera.

You should also:

  • Test your camera and sound settings in advance.

  • Be appropriately dressed

  • Have hair and makeup ready

  • Warm up your voice and go through the song

3. Fit the Audition to the Show

Unless you are specifically instructed to do so, avoid taking your audition song from the show for which you are auditioning. However, it only makes sense to show the audition panel that the type of show is right in your wheelhouse. If you’re auditioning for a contemporary drama, choose a dramatic contemporary piece. If you’re auditioning for an edgy new musical, select something offbeat that will make the panel sit up and take notice.

Refine your choice of material according to the character you are most right for in the show for which you’re auditioning. If you did your research, you probably have a character or two picked out that you really want to play.

Good luck with your Auditions!
