Concert Etiquette: The Ultimate List of Do’s and Don’ts

Welcome to the world of live musical performance! Performances are spaces for communities to

come together, for artists to share their craft and for art lovers to experience and appreciate the

work that has been done—this is true for every performance, whether you’re going to a music

recital or watching your favorite singer live. As we enter these shared spaces, there are some

things we can be mindful of to make it a great experience for us and our fellow concert-goers

(though, some of these rules go out the window depending on the context, like if you’re moshing

in a mosh pit!).

Without further ado, here’s a list of some of the do’s and don’ts of concert etiquette:

DO’s

1. DO Arrive Early

Give yourself enough time to park, check in, find your seat, go to the bathroom, and do anything

else you need to settle in.

2. DO Silence Your Devices

Turning off your devices or putting them on silent and making sure no alarms or vibrations are

on will help you stay present and distraction-free!

3. DO Take Care of Yourself!

Stay hydrated, wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and make sure to eat beforehand.

4. DO Come Prepared

Make sure to bring everything you might need, e.g. water, medications, deodorant, ear plugs,

etc.

5. DO Know What You’re Allowed to Bring

Most venues have a prohibited items list that outlines what you can and can’t bring. Checking

the list beforehand is great so you can make sure you get through the door seamlessly and

avoid another trip to the car.

6. DO Applaud and Cheer

Show love to the performers at the end of a song or when they’re interacting with the crowd.

7. DO Enjoy yourself and Make Friends!

Concerts are wonderful places to enjoy music, celebrate the performers, and meet new people

with similar interests.

DON’Ts

1. DON’T Be Too Loud

It’s important to be mindful of noise at concerts because everyone’s there to listen! Quietly

singing along with the lyrics (if at all), minimizing side conversations, and eating and drinking

quietly will make for a better experience for you, the artists, and your fellow concert goers. If you

think something may be too loud, like a bag of chips, save it for the break!

2. DON’T Record the Whole Time

Live concerts are spaces for real time, in-person connection—take a few photos/videos and

then put your device away and enjoy!

3. DON’T Drink Too Much

If you’re of drinking age, enjoying a light drink can add to the fun! Drink responsibly and don’t

overdo it.

4. DON’T Make a Mess

Like the old saying goes, leave the space better than you found it. Make sure to pick up after

yourself and take your trash and belongings with you.

5. DON’T Invade People’s Personal Space

Be mindful of personal space and make sure you’re not blocking anyone’s view or pushing and

shoving as you move through crowds.

6. DON’T Leave Early or During the Performance

Staying for the entire performance is a matter of respect for the performers and your fellow

audience members. If you do have to step out or leave, try to do so between numbers or during

a break.

As a general rule of thumb, remember the golden rule — treat others the way you would want to

be treated — and you should be good to go! Concerts are a space for collective enjoyment, and

being mindful of each of these points can help foster a harmonious and enjoyable experience
