Do Online Voice Lessons work?
Do Online Voice Lessons work? I’ve been teaching online voice lessons via Skype or FaceTime since years. I know this style of teaching is still pretty new but it is incredible how technology has advanced and how effective we can work with students from all over the world. I have students in Europe, Asia and the United States and I want to take the opportunity and answer some questions about online lessons. How do Online Lessons work? In general an online lesson is exactly like an in-person lesson. The lesson is still recorded and the lesson structure is as individual and flexible as for in-person lessons. Like with in-person lessons we work on vocalization and songs. What do you need for Online Voice Lessons? You will need a: - solid internet connection - microphone (most computers and tablets have an inbuild microphone and speaker) and - Skype or FaceTime account. Skype and FaceTime are both completely free. What are the benefits of Online Lessons? - Anywhere/Anytime: You can enjoy vocal lessons in the comfort of your home, in a hotel room while traveling or anywhere there is a good internet connection. - Convenience: even if students are more local, sometimes we just don’t want to deal with traffic, parking, weather etc. - Life circumstances: whether you are in the military or on tour, traveling the world or temporarily moving to a different place, online lessons still make it possible to continue your vocal education and sing. With the improvements that have been made in the quality of Skype and FaceTime it really does feel like you are in the same room together. I am able to detect tension, strain, breathiness, etc. every bit as effectively as I am with students taking in-person singing lessons. Technology is really something!
