Performance Preparation
How to prepare for a performance?! Generally spoken every artist has its own ways of preparing for a performance. We all have different needs, rituals, and habits but there are some things that most of us have in common when it comes to performance preparations. I recently shared a link with a blog about 3 tiny tweaks that will make you a much better performer, if you haven't seen it, HERE it is again. Now here are my 50 cents on this topic. 1. Learn your songs: It seems natural but 9 out of 10 times our performance is not as brilliant as it should be because we didn't do our homework. Apart from learning the lyrics by heart and being able to hit all the notes you should know all your songs so well that you could perform them in your sleep. When we perform live, circumstances are different than in the rehearsal room so being able to nail the song under every circumstance is what you should be going for. 2. Watch yourself: Sing in front of a mirror or record yourself on camera so you can see what you look like while singing. This will help to correct any mistakes you may or may not have and it will enable you do analyze your performance. "Work with your eyes" 3. Create Emotions: When people come to see your show, they want to see YOU. They are not sitting in the audience, waiting for you to make a mistake or deliver a technically perfect performance. Of course, being a great versatile singer doesn't hurt but it's not all that counts. Great performers are story teller and move people, they touch us and take us into their world. In order to do so, you have to be ready and willing to give all of you, be comfortable with yourself and live in the moment. Nothing else should be on your mind when you perform than your song and what you want to tell people. How do you want to make them feel? What do you want to say? Feel it, live it and others will do too! 4. Performance day: At the day of your performance make sure to: - Warm up your body and your voice - Stretch - Hydrate your body with water or tea You should have the feeling of being centered and released before you go on stage. On the night of the performance everyone is always nervous - it's a sign of sanity! Besides, being too relaxed can hurt your performance. 5. Enjoy! Last but not least: HAVE FUN and BE HONEST to your audience! They can feel it and will appreciate it. Being real is what makes us "authentic artist".
